Since 2006 two churches, Iglesia el Pesebre (Church of the Manger) in San Jose and
Walnut Grove in Mechanicsville, VA, have been working in partnership to be the light of
Christ in Pavas. Pavas is an extremely poor neighborhood on the outskirts of San Jose
in Costa Rica.

Life in Pavas means a daily scarcity of food. It means grinding poverty. For young
people the most viable options are often prostitution or crime. Children often leave
their education to help support the family. There is a cycle of hopelessness that is so
very difficult to break. ________________________________________________

But there is hope! The hope for the people of Pavas is the same as the hope
anywhere! It is the love of Jesus Christ in action through His people!

The servants at Iglesia el Pesebre work daily to be the light of Christ in the
community of Pavas. Five days a week they feed a hot meal to over 100 children and
young mothers. They offer youth educational activities that are an alternative from the
gang violence that dominates the neighborhood. They are a safe refuge for the elderly
to come and study the word of God, and to escape loneliness. They are a house of
worship and praise to God! They are the hands and feet of Christ! They are all of this
and more.

What a joy it is for the people of Walnut Grove to enter this story! In addition to
providing a portion of the funding for Iglesia el Pesebre, we travel down to Costa Rica
several times a year to work side by side with them in Pavas. We lead bible schools for
the kids, take the elderly on retreats, have activities with the youth, and help with
repairs and improvements on the church building. We raise our voices with them in
worship and we join them in prayer. We laugh with them, and we also cry with them.

We are partners. We are friends. We love them and we know they love us, too. When
we think of Pavas, we think of people with hopes, not a broken community. We think of
Sulma, and Rigoberto, and Kaylen, and Sonya, and Carmen. We smile when we think of
Marvin, and Fabian, and the Toni. We have worked alongside these people, and we share
their joys and their struggles.

You can be part of this story. Pray for the people of Pavas. Give faithfully to
Walnut Grove so we can support Iglesia el Pesebre. The groups going to Pavas always
need supplies, so be on the lookout for those announcements. Go to Pavas. The next trip
is usually less than six months away. You will never forget the people.

If you want to know more, there are about 30 people from Walnut Grove who have been
to Pavas. Grab someone and ask them about their time there. For more information you
can call the church office.
